The Head of Primary identifies ESL and LS students through the enrollment interviews. Referrals are discussed with classroom teacher and Learning Support Case Managers of the appropriate year level. The HOP also notifies the learning support coordinator. Initial assessments might be necessary.
Classroom teachers identify learning difficulty/extension students through bench marking and place students on our differentiation surfboard Tier 2 and 3 students will be referred to learning support. In collaboration with the learning support case manager, classroom teachers, parents and the student develop an ILP (Individual Learning Plan) with individual short/long term goals for each student. At the end of each term, class teacher and learning support teacher meet to discuss progress and decide on further intervention.
The Learning Support Case managers are part of a year level team and join the classroom teachers during planning and teaching time. They focus on the differentiation for LS, Extension and ESL students during planning time and co- teach in classrooms by working with different groups or individuals. The Case Managers also develop ILP’s in collaboration with classroom teacher for Tier 2 and 3 students and update them at end of the term.
Teacher assistants have a wide range of skills to support our teachers especially in developing student records, small group assistance and support in the classroom during whole class teaching. Our teacher assistants are also part of planning meeting and professional development sessions.
Parents are informed if students are identified as needing learning support or extension through a letter or email. Further consultation may occur between parents and classroom teacher/learning support teacher if required. The Individual Learning Plan will involve tasks to do at home.
Parents are urged to provide information at enrollment to indicate if their child needs any support and will require assistance. Individual learning plans, reports from former schools and specialists assessment results will help to plan for the student's needs as soon as possible. A personal coach works alongside Tier 3 students in the mainstream classroom on a daily basis. They help the student by breaking down instruction, organizing tasks and answering any question the student might have. This service requires extra funding by the parents or their organisations.
